Cumin vs caraway
They look similar in a jar. They do not taste the same. Cumin is the backbone of Indian tadka; caraway is rye bread and Central European cooking.
Culinary differences only. Traditional use is not scientific evidence of a medical effect.
Cumin
जीरा · Cuminum cyminum
Warm, earthy seed spice central to Indian tadka, rice, and masalas.

Cumin is warm, earthy, slightly bitter. Caraway is more anise-like.
When to use which
- Cumin in dal tadka, jeera rice, jeera aloo, and most Indian savoury dishes.
- Caraway in rye bread, cabbage, and some European sausages — not a jeera substitute.
If a UK shop mislabels them, smell the jar: jeera should smell like Indian restaurant tadka, not like rye.
